About Copenhagen Kastrup Airport
Copenhagen Kastrup Airport is the main international airport serving Copenhagen, Denmark and the surrounding areas. It is located on the island of Amager, 8 km (5 mi) south of Copenhagen city center. The airport covers an area of 2,800 hectares (6,900 acres). It is the largest airport in Scandinavia and the busiest airport in the Nordic countries, handling 43 million passengers in 2017.
The airport was opened in 1925 as a military airbase. It was converted to a civilian airport in 1955. Copenhagen Airport underwent a major expansion between 1996 and 2001, increasing its capacity from 12 to 22 million passengers per year. The airport was closed for three weeks following the September 11 attacks in 2001, after which it was extensively renovated and expanded.
